Why Setting Goals is Important for You

When did you learn the importance of setting goals? For me, it was several years ago, when I worked as a Bilingual Secretary at the African Telecommunications Union (ATU). At some point, the organization decided to recruit a new Secretary-General. On their CVs, the most promising candidates detailed the goals they had achieves, missed or overshoot. Five years later, after I joined a network marketing company, one of the pivotal moments for me was when I heard that ‘A goal is a dream with a deadline’. As my hopes of achieving my dreams laid in getting a great job or winning the lottery, it was a startling discovery. Suddenly, my dreams were within reach. I quickly and enthusiastically wrote down everything I have ever dreamed of and put deadlines to them. Today, some of those dreams I have achieved, the least important I have dropped along the way and I am still working on the others. Over the years, I have learnt that:

Setting goals helps you take control of your life.

1- You can’t achieve anything without goals.

When you set goals, you tell God clearly what you have chosen from his buffet of goodies. That is the reason why in my view some people reach goals way beyond their wildest imagination. It is as if God rewards you when you become clear about what you want.

2- Setting goals helps you take control of your life.

When you turn your wishes and dreams into goals, you give yourself a chance to achieve them. You no longer have to rely on an external source to help you reach your dreams. You take matters in your hands.

3-Goals give you a roadmap.

When you set goals and divide them into steps and tasks, you have a clear roadmap. You can see where you are going and how to get there. Your days become more exciting and every morning when you wake up, you have something to look forward to.
